• University of Denver, Denver, CO: 1991. “Religion, Sex, and Violence” Carl Raschke. Studied theory and method of the study of religion emerging from Continental thought, in particular, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Deleuze, Girard, and Kristeva.

• St. Thomas Theological Seminary, Denver, CO: 1991. “Literary Approaches to the Hebrew Bible” Peter Miscall. Introduction to various methods of modernist, postmodernist, and post-colonial reading methods with a particular emphasis on the “new” literary criticism from the 1960’s on. Professor Miscall highlighted various theories of reading and applied them to Hebrew Bible texts. We analyzed the narratives of Samuel and Kings in depth.

• Th.M. Ancient Near Eastern Semitics: 1991. Thesis: “The Contribution of Characterization to Judges 19-21.” Grace Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, IN. My time here focused on study of Hebrew Bible with a particular focus on languages (Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic), hermeneutics, and Ancient Near Eastern history.

• Postgraduate Work in Marriage and Family Therapy: 1991. Colorado Christian University, Denver, CO. I continued this course of study by taking 44 hours of postgraduate study in advanced therapy. I did this primarily to acquire the LPC in the state of Colorado and national board certification status. I achieved both of these in 1992. Also functioned as an intern working with 8 graduate students weekly under the supervision of psychologists/professors.

• Graduate Lecturer in New Testament Studies and Koine Greek, Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC. 1981-1986. At the age of 20 I was hired to lecture in Koine Greek. I excelled in this position and was hired at the age of 21 to lecture in Advanced Koine Greek and Exegesis and specific books of the NT in Greek to undergraduate and graduate students.

VISITING PROFESSOR

• Visiting Professor of Hermeneutics and NT Studies, Beijing, China. February 1999 and May 2000. I was invited on two occasions to consult leaders of the underground church in Beijing and Tianjin and offer lectures on hermeneutics and New Testament studies. Also helped leaders develop the concept of a “nomadic” seminary based on the thinking of Gilles Deleuze. This work continues presently.

• Visiting Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Perth, Australia. April 1999. As a result of my writing, speaking engagements, and referrals by former students, I was invited to guest lecture in Perth. While there, I presented two seminars, taught one class on Hebrew Literature, and consulted with business and education leaders in Western Australia.

• Guest Lecturer of Hermeneutics and Cultural Awareness, Staadt, Austria. December 1998. Lectured to and consulted with leaders of International Teams, an organization devoted to aiding refugees from Middle Eastern countries. Based in Vienna.

• Visiting Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Kiev, Ukraine. November 1997 and December 1999. I have visited this institute two times, and my duties included teaching three classes: Hebrew Literature, Hermeneutics, and The Contribution of Schevchenko to Ukrainian Literature. I also contributed to student advisement and consulted with head advisors in regards to the development of the school. I implemented a fund-raiser in America to purchase an entire library for the school.

• Visiting Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Manila, Philippines. June 1994 and June 1995. I visited the university in Manila two times and my duties included teaching three classes: Hermeneutics, Hebrew Literature, and the Contribution of Jose Rizal’s Writings to Filipino Culture. I contributed to student advisement, led a seminar with over 800 attendees, and consulted with business and education leaders.

• Guest Lecturer of Hermeneutics and Counseling Studies, London, England. September 1991. Lectured to and consulted with Christian leaders of a private institute devoted to the intersection of Christianity and counseling.

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE

• Designer and Director, First Annual Archaeology of the Bible Conference, Hosted by King Philosophy and Religion Department and King University Institute of Faith and Culture, Bristol, TN. The conference was held for two days and had almost 600 attendees total. Lectures by Oded Lipschits, Yuval Gadot, and Manfred Oeming.  November 13-14, 2016.

7. Redesigned the Old Testament Introduction and New Testament into a more accessible and relevant course for King students: Foundations of Christian Thought and Practice 2011. Foundations is a general education religion requirement at King University. King is a Presbyterian affiliated school, and understanding the Judeo-Christian tradition is a major component of the core curriculum. Foundations takes an academic approach to a critical, thoughtful overview of the Judeo-Christian tradition and an introduction to the critical research of religion in general. The end goal is to guide students through the analysis and articulation of a Judeo-Christian worldview. Essentially, the course is a lesson in critical thinking and an examination of how we as human beings construct values and meaning. Foundations grounds itself in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures and invites the students to base every assumption in the text and encourages students to critically reflect on their own worldviews. As the designer of this course (2010) and the professor, it is very important to me that my students comprehend the difference between theological suppositions grounded in conjecture, and the study of religion based on good analysis and criticism. King, as a confessional institution, places great stress on an historical Christian worldview; and yet, also wants to be a welcoming place to all students no matter what their particular faith or non-faith tradition. One of my major goals in this course is to teach the Judeo-Christian tradition in a non-threatening, non-coercive manner thus honoring King’s history and tradition on the one hand, and on the other I want this course to function as an essential component to a liberal arts education. I think this approach is also important for my confessional students to comprehend this hermeneutic in the hopes that they will execute more rigorous self-criticism and develop broader, more expansive worldviews.

Key Pedagogical strategies:

Students write 8 reflective critiques during the course. Each critique is based on an activity or reading centered around one of the twelve major themes presented in the course. Students reflect on the theme for that module, how it is grounded in the Jewish-Christian Scriptures, what that means in relation to Judeo-Christianity, and how it relates to pressing issues in the 21st century. Students are asked to make meaningful reflections rooted in the text being studied.  The final assessment for this course is a five to seven page Judeo-Christian worldview. Most students choose 2-3 themes essential to the Judeo-Christian tradition, and then explain how these themes inform this worldview. Students are graded on a rubric, which analyzes for organization, clear and competent ideas, conventions and grammar, comparison and contrast to other world religions and the analysis of biblical texts.

1. Hired new adjunct faculty: PhD Hebrew Bible, PhD New Testament, and PhD Cultural Anthropology.

2. Instituted formal agreement with Tel Azekah consortium March 2012. Established a partnership with Lautenschläger Azekah Expedition, an Israeli-German led archaeological expedition of the biblical site of Tel Azekah in Israel, and each year leads undergraduate students to Israel in pursuit of epistemological humility, excellence in scholarship, and nuanced thinking regards to religion and geo-politics.  The Tel Azekah Expedition focuses on the background and history of the Jewish and Christian Scriptures and the history of Judeo-Christianity by visiting the most important and relevant sites in Israel. King University is one of only two American universities affiliated with the Tel Azekah Expedition and a part of a prestigious international consortium of schools already invited to participate including the Heidelberg University and Tel Aviv University. In addition to being able to participate in the Tel Azekah dig, King students have opportunities for graduate studies at Tel Aviv University. https://azekah.org/.

3. Designed and coordinated a B.S. Religious Studies major for online students. We are now in our second iteration and have garnered 12 new majors. We will continue to expand our offerings in this area. Lately, we designed a course on Introduction to Islam.

4. Coordinate meetings with Abingdon Presbytery of SW Virginia and Holston Presbytery of East Tennessee. Currently consulting with leaders to develop a CEP offering for their elders.

5. Recruited faculty member to teach Arabic.

12. Lead tours of West Bank in Palestine with a focus on sites in Ancient Israel and attempting to better understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

• Director of CAST: Center for Art, Social Justice, and Theology, Seattle, WA 2003-Present. Duties include vision casting, establishing the organization as a non-profit, fundraising, working with board members, curriculum development, and international projects, for example promoting the production of documentaries on indigenous worship in Sudan and Nepal.

As chairman, I developed and implemented departmental policies and philosophies, coordinated and managed the full-time and adjunct faculty, advised students and faculty, implemented curriculum development, maintained communication with diverse populations and vocations to strengthen the department, and conducted extensive work and research with administrators outside of the department. In an attempt to provide an excellent and well-rounded education for our students, I hired adjunct and full-time faculty who were not only leaders in their chosen interests, but who would also provide an ever-increasing worldview to our students. As a founding principal, I contributed to the vision and direction of the school, coordinated and participated in numerous fund-raising events both nationally and internationally, worked extensively with business and education leaders, recruited faculty and students on a local, national, and international level, and developed the core and adjunct curriculum for three graduate degrees. I also functioned as the assistant director of marketing, which included writing and creating brochures, producing, writing, and directing the school catalogue, producing and writing radio and television spots and DVD programs, and helped direct national and international events to promote the school. As a co-founder, I developed a new cross-cultural, interdisciplinary journal devoted to the intersection of art and human concerns. My duties included fund-raising, vision casting, writing and editing, and promotion of authors and artists. I worked with nationals and internationals to develop the journal. The journal had a regular printing of 8,000 and was distributed by Spring Arbor. • Co-founder of “The Stories Men Tell,” an international seminar for men’s issues. 1991-2002.

I directed this seminar to men and sought to provide thoughtful consideration of men’s issues for personal growth and development, personal change, discovering healing with regards to relationships, and how to live lovingly and sincerely in our day-to-day lives. I developed the presentation, developed the marketing, produced the written brochures, radio and television spots, and helped coordinate the events throughout America and various foreign countries. This also included numerous smaller events for a focused population in Breckenridge, CO, Sandy Cove, MD, and Key West, FL.

• Founder of “Romancing the Heart,” an international seminar 1994-2002.

• Political Fundraiser, Judy Nicastro, Seattle City Council 2002. Co-planned and directed fund-raising events for Judy Nicastro, Democratic candidate, throughout the Seattle area. This included selection of key figures, coordinating the events, and working with numerous individuals and institutions (Intiman Theater, Seattle Opera, etc.) within the Seattle area to market Judy’s campaign marketing goals.

• Raised funds to establish a library at an institute in Kiev, Ukraine 1999. $7,000

• Executive fly fishing retreats, Breckenridge, CO. Summers 1996/1997.

Envisioned, planned, marketed, and executed a fly fishing retreat for executives as a means to raise money for The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. At the time, I was a professional guide in the states of Colorado and Montana. These two retreats were very successful for fundraising for The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology.
